Transportation Strategy Moves the Bottom Line: An interview with Shouvik Chaudhuri

In many organizations, transportation is managed as a simple “cost center.”

While true from a financial point of view, the reality is that the final mile—however your company defines that—is one of the most powerful levers for improving customer experience and the bottom line.

We sat down with Shouvik Chaudhuri (a Director in Spinnaker SCA's Transportation Optimization practice) to talk about what an effective transportation strategy looks like, how transportation optimization can drive an outsized impact, and how companies can shift from reactive cost management to a more deliberate, data-driven approach when it comes to managing freight costs.

Why did you choose a career in supply chain? What do you enjoy most about it?

I was drawn to the field of supply chain because it sits right at the intersection of strategy and execution. Decisions made in the boardroom directly impact day-to-day operations on the ground.

Specifically, as it relates to transportation, I realized early in my career that optimizing how goods move physically from manufacturing to warehouse and distribution to delivery is not only tied to financial margins, but also customer experience. It’s one of the most customer-facing roles in supply chain.

What I enjoy most about my work at Spinnaker SCA is the opportunity to solve complex business problems—whether that’s redesigning a network, implementing transportation systems, or improving cost to serve. The impact for our clients is tangible and measurable, which makes the work very rewarding.

What’s a fun fact about transportation that most people don’t realize?

Transportation costs are often less than 5–7% of a product’s total cost—but they influence nearly 100% of the customer experience. Even small optimizations—like better load consolidation or smarter routing—can reduce costs by 10–15% without adding new assets. That’s the hidden power of having a data-driven transportation strategy.

What advice would you give to companies navigating cost volatility in transportation?

To navigate the volatility of freight markets, the biggest shift a company can make is moving from reactive cost management to proactive, data-driven optimization. Rising fuel costs, tariffs, and disruption can be a driving force to rethink your network, improve visibility, and adopt advanced analytics and AI.

Specially, a few key priorities I recommend:

  • Invest in visibility and analytics because you can’t optimize what you can’t see.
  • Focus on cost-to-serve, not just cost reduction. You should understand profitability at the lane, customer, and product level.
  • Build network agility and make it a competitive advantage by adding flexibility in sourcing, routing, and fulfillment.
  • Avoid short-term cuts especially in technology and talent, where long-term capability matters most.

What advice would you give to students or early-career supply chain professionals?

Start by building a strong foundation—understand the end-to-end supply chain, not just one function. Then focus on developing both business and technical skills. Learning enterprise tools like TMS, WMS and how they work together are critical. Then it’s about staying curious and always ask “why”—before digging into the data. and using data to support your answers.

Just remember to be adaptable. Supply chains are evolving quickly with new technologies, AI, and global disruptions. So don’t underestimate the value of hands-on experience—some of the best learning happens on the ground.

From network design to transportation strategy, Shouvik Chaudhuri brings a practical, data-driven mindset to solving complex supply chain challenges. His perspective underscores a consistent theme: The organizations that win are the ones that combine visibility, analytics, and adaptability—while never losing sight of the real-world impact of their decisions.
